SELINSGROVE, ( Pa. ) – Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, coordinators of the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University, will present the 2007-08 Alice Pope Shade Lecture April 2. The lecture, titled "The Emerging Alliance of Religion and Ecology," begins at 7:30 p.m. in Isaacs Auditorium of Seibert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Grim and Tucker are the series editors of World Religions and Ecology from Harvard Divinity School 's Center for the Study of World Religions. They also are senior lecturers and scholars at Yale, holding appointments in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, as well as the Divinity School and the Department of Religious Studies.
Grim teaches courses in Native American and indigenous religions, religion and ecology, and ritual and mysticism in the world's religions. Tucker specializes in the religions of East Asia, and teaches courses on religion and ecology, and cosmology and ecology.
The Shade lecture is supported by the Alice Pope Shade Fund, established for use by the Department of Philosophy, Religion and Classical Studies in 1983 by Shade's daughter, Rebecca Shade Mignot, a 1954 graduate of Susquehanna University. This year's lecture is part of the 2007-08 University Theme, "Water."
"Water, an element in the rites of many world religions, plays an important role in the spiritual lives and practices of people around the globe," said the Rev. Mark Wm. Radecke, university chaplain. "Such sacred and sacramental use has implications with regard to exercising responsible stewardship of water and, more generally, the environment."
