The School includes eight departments in the Natural and Social Sciences. Almost 30% of Susquehanna University's 1900 students major in one of the disciplines represented in this school; and its outstanding faculty also contribute courses that are offered as part of the Core curriculum and the Honors program.

The natural and social sciences present special opportunities for students to undertake research projects with their professors, many of whom have received prestigious NIH and NSF grants. These research projects often lead to presentations at professional meetings and to graduate school and professional opportunities upon graduation.

Many biology, biochemistry, and chemistry majors have graduated to exciting careers in medicine, health care, pharmaceutical industries, and other related fields. Physics opportunities exist in aerospace industries and other areas of technology for Susquehanna physicists who are prepared with internships and on and off-campus research experiences. Mathematics and computer sciences graduates are finding challenging and rewarding professional openings through their internships and other hands-on learning experiences. Our unique Environmental Sciences program prepares graduates to work on environmental policy issues, to become lawyers, and to work for agencies charged with protecting the environment.

We have a successful pre-law program and we also prepare many other professionals through our courses, internships and service learning possibilities. For example, counselors, therapists, and policy makers emerge from the psychology department and sociology program; lawyers from political science; and government officials, political activists and diplomats from political science and international studies. All of these liberal arts majors provide excellent preparation for most professional and business careers.

The overwhelming success rate of graduates from the Susquehanna University demonstrates that their liberal arts and sciences background has prepared them well both for exciting professional opportunities and for full and rewarding lives.

The descriptions above only scratch the surface of the exciting opportunities that await you in the School of Natural and Social Sciences. You should consult the pages of the individual departments for more complete descriptions of these programs and many others. Please remember, as you consider what to do with your lives, that a background in the natural and social sciences leads to many professional pathways and helps you develop an understanding of the global environment of the future.
