Senior Scholars Day 2005

On Tuesday, April 19, 2005 Senior Scholars Day was held on campus. Senior students presented the results of research or other scholarly or creative projects they worked on during the year. This event continues a nearly twenty-nine year tradition currently supported by the Provost and Dean of the Faculty.

At this year’s event 106 students shared research findings in the form of poster displays and oral presentations. Topics included violence prevention and the education system, an analysis of U.S. military interventions since 1993, the courtship and copulatory behavior of the Wolf Spider, the economic transition of Poland, thoughts and expressions associated with aggressive driving and low speed wind tunnel testing.

Research from the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology and Anthropology represented the university's Department of Natural and Social Sciences. Papers and presentations from the departments of Art, Education, English, History and Philosophy and Religion represented the School of Arts, Humanities and Communication. Students from the departments of Accounting, Economics and Management represented the Sigmund Weis School of Business. Many of these students regularly present at outside research forums including the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, and regional and national conferences individual disciplines. In addition, this year's event was expanded to showcase the talents of all exceptional students in the music and graphic arts program. Ten senior music students presented recitals as part of the program. In addition, four graphic arts seniors presented their work which was on display throughout the day.

This year's event was expanded from last year and many of the presentations were held during the afternoon. Faculty members and their students attended the event in lieu of their regular class schedule. Dr. Jack Holt, Professor of Biology, divided his class into teams and each team's assignment was to evaluate two bits of research done by a senior student in the natural sciences. Part of their grade was determined by what criteria they established for the project.

The event began with a lecture by Dr. Pamela Gehron ('74) Robey, chief of the bone research branch of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, Maryland where she conducts dental stem cell research. Dr. Robey's keynote address focused on her research and the value of that experience for undergraduate students. A reception was held at the conclusion of the event to celebrate the senior student scholars and their teachers.
