Software Requirements (2011-2012)

Susquehanna students bringing their own computers to campus will need the following software.

Windows Platform (PC)

OPERATING SYSTEMS THAT ARE COMPATIBLE FOR USE AT SU

• Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (RECOMMENDED)
• Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
• Microsoft Windows Vista Business
• Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • One of the operating systems listed above are required to take advantage of the available network resources on campus. Some of these resources include Internet access, use of network shares (including home drives and personal web space), the ability to join the domain, and access to network printers. A Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade may be purchased at an educational price from the Select Student Store. The cost is about $99.
• Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium **
• Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium **
• Microsoft Windows XP Home **
  • Operating systems marked with (**) indicate that they will work on the SU network with limited capacity. Only Internet access will be available. 
  • Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows are compatible.

OPERATING SYSTEMS THAT ARE NOT COMPATIBLE FOR USE AT SU

• Microsoft Windows XP Media Center
• Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic
• Microsoft Windows 7 Starter or Home Basic
• Obsolete Versions of Windows (95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000) 
  • Computers with these operating systems will not be able to access the Internet or the SU network due to software or configuration limitations.

OFFICE SUITE

• Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010: Use of the Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Word, is required for most classes at Susquehanna. Some majors require new students to take a class that includes a hands-on introduction to word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet modeling, and more using the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft Office Enterprise 2010 can be purchased at a considerably discounted educational price from the Select Student Store. The cost is about $99.

Macintosh Platform

• Macintosh OS X:  Macintosh OS X (10.4 or above) is necessary to take advantage of the available network resources on campus. If possible, we recommend OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). A Snow Leopard upgrade can be purchased from the Apple Education Store for about $29. Mac OS 9 x 10.3 or earlier are not compatible with the SU network.
• Microsoft Office 2010 for Macintosh:  Office 2011 for Macintosh is critical for Mac users at Susquehanna. This software is compatible with our e-mail system and produces files that can be read by either PCs or Macs. The “Standard Edition” is our recommended version, as it contains all of the available applications. The “Home and Student” & “Home & Business” editions omit some applications and are not recommended. Microsoft Office 2011 for Macintosh may be purchased at a considerably discounted educational price from  Select Student Store. The cost is about $95. * Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac will be released in late 2010. The cost is about $95.

Provided Software

Susquehanna will provide the following software to students bringing their own computers to campus:

• Symantec Endpoint Protection:  Virus protection is required on all computers connected to the campus network – BOTH PC’s and MAC’s. Susquehanna provides Symantec Endpoint Protection to all students, faculty, and staff free of charge. Using the provided software allows Susquehanna to automatically provide daily antivirus updates to your computer while you are on campus. (USE OF SU’S ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE IS REQUIRED! ANY OTHER ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE MUST BE REMOVED WHEN YOU USE THE SU NETWORK.)

Optional Software

Susquehanna provides access to course specific software in the public computer labs. However, you may want to consider purchasing any of the following software based on your major, minor, or personal interests:

• Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium - (Mac/Win)
  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign CS5, Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Flash CS5, Dreamweaver CS5, Fireworks CS5, Acrobat Pro 9) is used in several digital art courses. Creative Suite can be purchased at an educational discount from the Select Student Store for about $448.
• Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2010
  • Microsoft Visual Studio is used in many computer science courses. Visual Studio can be purchased at an educational discount from the Select Student Store for about $100.

Additional software is available at educational discounts from the Select Student Store.  Please note, since all software sold from the Select Student Store is priced for educational discounts, they require proof of academic enrollment.
