Social Studies Certification

Political science majors who seek secondary teaching certification must complete a modified major program as well as additional requirements mandated by the Susquehanna Department of Education and the State of Pennsylvania. The Political Science Department STRONGLY ADVISES students considering secondary certification to: 1) Register with the SU Department of Education as soon as possible, and to 2) Seek advice on the education program from an advisor in that department. Students should be aware that this is a demanding curriculum and that it is ideal to begin it during their first year. While it is possible to begin this curriculum as late as the start of the second year, students who do so must be take care that their course sequencing and selection will allow them to complete the curriculum within four years.

The Political Science Major -- Secondary Education

The major for those seeking certification consists of 40 semester hours, 20 of which must be at the 300 level or above. To assure breadth of study, 24 semester hours of required courses are distributed in the following manner:
  • POLI:111 American Government and Politics (4 S.H)
  • POLI:121 Comparative Government and Politics (4 S.H)
  • POLI:131 World Affairs (4 S.H.)
  • POLI:205 Research Process and Data Analysis (4 S.H.)
  • One Political Thought course at the 300 level or above (4 S.H.)
  • POLI:501 Senior Seminar (4 S.H.)
In lieu of the subfield requirement, students must complete at least one more four semester hour course in each of the following areas: American Government and Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Politics and Foreign Policy.

The other four semester hours of political science courses are electives. A maximum of 2 internship credits may be counted toward the major elective requirements.

Additionally, majors seeking certification must also meet the following requirements:

1) 130 semester hours overall to graduate
2) 3.00 GPA in political science courses
3) 3.00 overall GPA
4) No more than 65 semester hours in the same academic area
5) at least 65 semester hours in residence at SU or through SU approved off campus programs, and 32 of the last 38 hours at SU
6) No EC, I or N grades

Certification Requirements

Students who wish to be accepted by the Education Department to seek certification in secondary education must achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA by their fourth semester, and must seek formal admission to the Teaching Program.

Political science majors must be certified in Social Studies or Citizenship Education. If students select Citizenship Education, the Department STRONGLY recommends dual certification in both Citizenship Education and Social Sciences so that students will be positioned to compete with graduates of other programs and to meet teaching requirements in other states.

Additional information about secondary education certification is available through the Department advisor and the Education Department. Students may monitor completion of the major through use of the checklist on the Political Science Certification and Teaching Certification pages.
