European Union Simulation
The European Union Simulation is the culmination of a semester long
class studying the European Union Organization and its functions.
Every year, 156 students and 15 faculty representing 12 colleges
and universities meet in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C.
to take part in the three day simulation. This past year, the schools
represented 13 of the member states of the E.U. for the entirety
of the simulation. The schools research their particular country's
interests in the union in order to represent that country at the
simulation. The simulation involves meetings of the EU Council,
two parliamentary committees, and two Councils of Ministers. During
the three days in D.C., students have the opportunity to visit the
embassy of the country that they represented in the simulation.
For the 2007 simulation, Susquehanna represented Sweden, and Eric
Reighard '08 portrayed Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
Other students portrayed government ministers or members of the
European Parliament. The 2007 theme was the European Union's efforts
to counter global warming. Past themes have been security policy
and the E.U.'s reactions to terrorism, the E.U. policy on genetically
modified foods, and justice and home affairs.
