The novel is based on a short story in his critically acclaimed collection Crow Man. His second novel, Cotton Song, is also forthcoming from Random House. Bailey is also the author of A Short Story Writer's Companion, and editor of On Writing Short Stories. He is the recipient of numerous writing awards including a Newhouse Award from the John Gardner Foundation, and a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship for Fiction.

Fincke has published 18 books of poetry, short fiction and nonfiction, most recently a poetry collection title Standing around the Heart, and a short story collection titled Sorry I Worried You, which received the 2003 Flannery O'Connor Award, arguably the most prestigious prize for literary fiction in the United States. His non-fiction book Amp'd: A Father's Backstage Pass is a personal recording of his son's rock and roll life with the signed bands "Lifer" and "Breaking Benjamin." His collection of poems Writing Letters for the Blind won the 2003 Ohio State University Press/ The Journal Book Award.
