Living On Campus: Liberty Alley Application OverviewHelpful Information about Liberty Alley
Click Here for the Liberty Alley Townhouse Application Now!Where and what is Liberty Alley anyways?Liberty Alley is actually a street, well an alley, in Selinsgrove. If you travel down University Avenue towards Market Street, right after you cross the railroad tracks there is an alley on your right. Once you turn onto Liberty Alley, there is a parking lot and a set of seven townhouses almost immediately to your right. This complex of townhouses was purchased by the university several years ago and creatively named "Liberty Alley". What are the townhouses like on the inside? Each townhouse has a living room and full kitchen on the first floor in addition to a bedroom. The second floor has two bedrooms and one large bathroom that is shared by the three residents. How many people can live in each townhouse? There are three single rooms in each townhouse. With seven townhouses, that means that 21 people total can live in Liberty Alley. Townhouse #7 houses an RA in one of the singles. Is Liberty Alley considered on campus housing?Yes, Liberty Alley, although it is located beyond the east edge of campus, is considered on campus housing because it is owned by the university. This means that the cost to live there is included in your room fee (i.e. no utility bills). Does it come with all the amenities of other residence halls?Yes, the bedrooms each have Internet access, phone lines, cable, etc. A housekeeper comes periodically to clean the common areas and bathrooms as well as take out the trash. There are, however, no laundry facilities in the townhouses. But, there is a local laundromat conveniently located within a few blocks on Pine Street. Is there an extra charge to live there?Yes, each resident is charged an extra fee each semester. This amount will be determined by the Business Office in mid-February. Is it true that you don't have to purchase the university meal plan if you live in Liberty Alley?Yes, Liberty Alley residents are the only on campus residents that have the option not to purchase the standard meal plan. Many residents choose to cook in their townhouse kitchens rather than eat in campus meal facilities. If you live in Liberty Alley, you are not automatically assigned a meal plan. If you want one, please see the Business Office to have it added. How do I apply for one of the townhouses?First you need to find two friends. Because the residents of a townhouse can't help but interact with each other on a greater level than in most other residence halls, it is important that the three residents choose to live together. Therefore, you can not apply for just a room in Liberty Alley. Once you have identified your group of three, just follow the link on this page to the application. Applications are due by 4pm on Monday, March 17, 2008. Before you fill out the application, you will need to know:
Once you submit your application, the average lottery number of your group will be determined. We will then award spaces to the seven groups with the lowest average lottery numbers. The group leaders of all applicants will be notified on Monday, March 24, 2008 as to whether or not you won a space. The group leaders of the seven winning groups will then receive further instructions and paperwork. If my group is awarded a Liberty Alley townhouse, how do you know which one we want? The application form asks your group to rank each of the seven townhouses according to preference. Thus, you should list a #1 beside the first townhouse you would like, a #2 beside your second choice and so on. Once we have determined the seven winning groups, the group with the lowest average lottery number will be assigned their first preference. The second group will be assigned either their second preference if their first preference was taken by the first group or they will be assigned their first preference if it wasn't taken already. That's a little confusing! How about an example?!
Can I apply if I'm going to be abroad in the fall? No, students that will be abroad in the fall can not apply for any on campus housing. The university can not hold a space empty for you while you are away. Thus, if you applied for campus housing and then went abroad in the fall, your space would be filled with another student and that student would not be forced to move when you return in the spring. Can I apply if I've already applied to be released off campus?Yes, you may apply even though you've applied to live off campus. However, if your group wins a townhouse and accepts the space, you're application to live off campus is void because you have now contracted for campus housing. Can I apply if I've already been assigned housing in a volunteer project or Greek house? No, if you've already contracted housing through a volunteer project or Greek organization, you may not apply for any other type of on campus housing. Can I apply if I'm also applying for a space in the Sassafras Complex or West Village?Yes, you can apply for a Liberty Alley townhouse at the same time you're listed on an application for a space in the Sassafras Complex or West Village. Many students do this so that if they don't get into Liberty Alley, they have a chance at other premium spaces. However, if your Liberty Alley group wins a townhouse and accepts, this voids all of the Sassafras and West Village applications you have been listed on. Therefore, you should be careful that you are not hurting another groups' chances at getting a Sassafras or West Village space. For instance, if you are listed on an application for a Sassafras eight-person apartment, but you win a Liberty Alley townhouse, the other applicants for the apartment will have their application voided because they now don't have enough people to fill the space. If my group is awarded a townhouse and we accept, can I change my mind and choose other housing on campus? No. Once you contract for the townhouse, this is your housing assignment for next year.
