How do I apply for one of the group spaces?

First you need to find a group of friends. Once you have identified your group and what you will be applying for, just follow the link on this page to the application. Applications are due by 4pm on Monday, March 17, 2008. Before you fill out the application, you will need to know:

  • The full names of the people in your group.
  • The lottery numbers of each person.
  • Whether or not each member of your group has applied for off campus housing
  • What your groups' preferences are as to which space you live in.
  • Who in your group is willing to act as the "group leader" (i.e. the person who will be the main contact for your group and will be responsible for receiving and completing the paperwork should your group be awarded a space).

Once you submit your application, the average lottery number of your group will be determined. We will then award spaces to the groups with the lowest average lottery numbers by using the preferences listed on the application. The group leaders will be notified as to whether or not you won a space. Group leaders of winning groups will also receive further instructions and paperwork.

Can I apply if I'm going to be abroad in the fall?

No, students that will be abroad in the fall can not apply for any on campus housing. The university can not hold a space empty for you while you are away. Thus, if you applied for campus housing and then went abroad in the fall, your space would be filled with another student and that student would not be forced to move when you return in the spring.

Can I apply if I've already applied to be released off campus?

Yes, you may apply even though you've applied to live off campus. However, if your group wins and accepts a space and, you're application to live off campus is void because you have now contracted for campus housing.

Can I apply if I've already been assigned housing in a volunteer project or Greek house?

No, if you've already contracted or are in the process of contracting housing through a volunteer project or Greek organization, you may not apply for any other type of on campus housing.

Can my name be listed on more than one Sassafras application or West Village?

Yes and no. Your name can appear on multiple applications only if those applications are each for a different sized space (i.e. you can apply for a townhouse and a suite). You can not, however, be a member of two different groups vying for the same sized space (i.e. you can not apply for a townhouse with two different groups of students).

Many students choose to put in an application for several different sizes of spaces so that if they don't get a particular sized space, they still have a chance at other premium spaces.

However, once a larger group that you are in wins a space, this voids all of the other smaller group applications you have been listed on. Therefore, you should be careful that you are not hurting another groups' chances. For instance, if you apply for a townhouse with seven friends and also apply for a suite with a different group of friends, your winning a townhouse precludes your friends on the suite application from getting the space no matter what their average lottery number is because they now don't have enough people on their application.

If my group is awarded a space and we accept, can I change my mind and choose other housing on campus?

No. Once you contract for the space, this is your housing assignment for next year.
