International Study

Apart from traveling with professors while conducting research, students may engage in travel in the sciences through 2 programs: the Focus Programs and specialized science education experiences. A Focus Program is a short duration (between 2 and 3 weeks) study abroad program that allows students to concentrate on several aspects of a unique part of the world.

Focus Australia - Travel with Drs. David Richard (Biology) and M. L. Klotz (Psychology) to different parts of Australia to learn about how human and other organisms interact with their environment and surroundings. This program of study concentrates on the history, culture and biogeography of one of the world's most arid countries. This program involves two courses (Biological Issues in Australia, and Environmental Psychology) taken in the semester prior to the study tour. The tour itself functions as a 2-credit course that requires a written, reflective review and a group project, both of which are completed during the following semester. This course is listed as an interdisciplinary 500-level course. Areas of interest students visit include: Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Cairns, Uluru (Ayer's Rock), diving at the Great Barrier Reef, and Kata Tjuta.

Focus Carribean - Travel with Drs. Jennifer Elick (Earth and Environmental Science), David Ramsaran (Sociology), and Jim Blessing (Political Sciences) to Barbados and St. Lucia to learn how the culture and environment clash in the Caribbean. This program concentrates on the history, culture, and geology/ecology of two Caribbean islands while focusing on the Caribbean as a whole. Students enroll in a course taught by one of the three professors taught a semester prior to the study tour. The tour itself functions as a 2-credit course that requires a written, reflective review and a group project, both of which are completed during the following semester. This course is listed as an interdisciplinary 500-level course. Areas of interest students visit include: Bridgetown, Casteries, Harrison's Cave, an active volcano at Soufriere, and diving in Holetown.

Specialized Science Education Experience - Students may conduct research or become involved in an academic exchange program in Russia or may enroll in Biogeodiversity courses that explore the environment and ecology/biogeodiversity of small regions. Dr. Jack Holt (Biology) will lead you on these adventures. Past Biogeodiversity class trips have included short trips to Puerto Rico and Costa Rico to examine the reef, rainforest, karst topography, and mangrove swamp environments with a concentration on education and discovery learning.

Dr. Holt may also take students to Russia where they visit Pushkin, Moscow, and stay in Yaroslavl. Students examine the people, religion, and food while traveling, and they are exposed to the geography, culture, and ecology of Russia. They also spend time at the Uleima Biology Camp where they learn about the biota and ecology of the region around the Uleima River.
