Fall 2004 CampaignTo better empower students to deal with issues of sexual violence, the university community has organized an initiative on sexual violence awareness, education and prevention. The initiative kicked off Thursday evening, Sept. 2, with a Forum on Sexual Violence in Weber Chapel Auditorium. Nearly 1,000 Susquehanna students, faculty and staff attended the session. Moderated by university President L. Jay Lemons, the panel provided a response to the reports of sexual assault from last year and information about how to avoid or prevent similar incidents, and invited discussion about the role each member of the community can take to end sexual violence. A question and answer session concluded the presentations. The forum marked the start of a teal ribbon campaign dubbed "Not on My Watch," September 2-10, representing the campus community's move from the wounds of last year, depicted by the purple ribbons worn at the end of the spring semester, to a unified commitment of awareness, education and prevention this year. Teal-colored ribbon pins were distributed at the conclusion of the forum and ribbons have been placed on trees throughout the campus to heighten awareness of the campaign. Because a campus-wide response to sexual violence needs to involve students, additional activities and programming can be planned now that students are back on campus and can be part of the process. These activities will be in addition to the ongoing programming that occurs regularly during the academic year and which is described in the Fact Sheet on Sexual Violence Education. |
