Kid's World
Kid’s World began in the 2003-2004 school year as a community program for kids up to age 12. At the beginning, the goal of the program was to teach children about personal financial success skills. In February of 2004, our team conducted the program for about 25 children.
The next year, we decided to redesign our program and focus more on global economics and different features that effect countries’ economies. We designed a program emphasizing the economies of four different countries around the world, presenting facts such as exchange rate, literacy rate, median household income, and imports and exports for each country. In the fall of 2004 we conducted the program in two communities to reach a total of 30 children. Then we partnered with the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) and their after school program called Success Plus to reach even more children. We were also invited by a social studies teacher to present the program for fifth graders. By forging these partnerships, we were able to reach over 170 children.
Throughout the 2005-2006 school year, Kid’s World continued to flourish. We redesigned our displays and updated the information we presented. We also included information about gas prices since it is such a relevant issue in our economy right now. We presented Kid’s World at more schools and further expanded the amount of students reached by this program.
Our program has only grown from there. We continuously update our information and the worksheets that are part of this program. Kid’s World is a unique opportunity because it allows children to “travel the world” without leaving the four walls of their classroom. This year we hope to continue the program and educate the most students possible about the workings and importance of their economy and other economies throughout the world..
