A Walk on Wall Street
"A Walk on Wall Street" provides students in grades 9-12 the opportunities to immerse themselves in a 90-minute initial experience and several 30-40 minute follow-up activities that examine what the stock market is, how to study and purchase stocks, what a low to high risk investment means, why today's market turmoil exists, what investors can do to survive these economic challenges, and how to apply their learning in a stock market simulation event.
High school students, our country's future investors in the stock market, need to know the critical connections between the volatility of today's stock market and the economic issues connected to mortgage rates, jobless claims, credit, etc. The fact that the 2008 market will close as its worst year since the Great Depression makes this project extremely timely, relative, and necessary.
The project includes pre and post tests and feedback reflections, interactive power point slides, interviews with Susquehanna University economics and business professors and students, and an interactive and competitive simulation. Winners and participants will receive recognition buttons and certificates for their achievement.
After the initial experience with SU SIFE members, high school teachers will sustain the Wall Street Walk in several mini-session follow-up experiences based on the project format, and they will provide feedback regarding students' growth and economic literacy.
