  • The American Anthropological Association offers an excellent comprehensive site for links and information on careers in anthropology-http://www.aaanet.org/careers.htm.

A couple of useful overview sites:

  • Northern Kentucky University offers "Careers In Anthropology: Where the Jobs Are" http://www.nku.edu/%7Eanthro/careers.html

  • Brigham Young has a site titled "What Can I Do With An Anthropology Degree?" http://fhss.byu.edu/anthro/Anthropology/deptindex.htm

  • For more information on some of the career directions listed above, please refer to the following sources:

  • Education - This is not limited to teaching and can include administration and counseling. For specific directions for graduate research and/or graduate schools, please make an appointment to speak with your professor. S/he may be able to recommend particular departments or universities depending on your interests or strengths.

  • Museums and Research Centers - The American Association of Museums runs an excellent employment data base, which includes internship and fellowship possibilities: http://www.aam-us.org/aviso/index.cfm. The Council for Museum Anthropology, a section of the American Anthropological Association, has a site that includes links for many museums, plus links for those interested in museum studies and museum careers: http://www.nmnh.si.edu/cma/index.html. The Museum Employment Resource Center has a comprehensive listing of job opportunities that also includes internships, fellowships, and seasonal work: http://www.museum-employment.com/
  • .
  • Photography and Filmmaking - While shooting for National Geographic or the Discovery Channel may be an ambition, there are a variety of directions for photographers and filmmakers to pursue. The Society for Visual Anthropology, a section of the American Anthropological Association, offers the following site: http://www.societyforvisualanthropology.org/index.html. The University of Southern California maintains an exhaustive "Ur" site for all things visual and anthropological: http://www.usc.edu/dept/elab/urlist

  • Market Research - Market researchers figure out what drives people to buy consumer products. Market researchers combine quantitative data with an understanding of how markets work to better promote a product. Some good resources on market research as a career include: the Market Research Career Information Center (http://www.researchinfo.com/docs/jobs/index.cfm), the A.C. Neilsen Center for Marketing Research (http://www.bus.wisc.edu/nielsencenter/), and the Careers-in-Marketing site (http://www.careers-in-marketing.com/).

  • Non-Governmental Organizations - Non-governmental organizations focus on economic development in other countries. Those affiliated with the UN are available here: http://www.ngo.org/. The NGO Café offers a place to learn more about current and future NGO projects and practices: http://www.gdrc.org/ngo/, and the following link will take you to a research area for NGOs: http://www.questia.com/Index.jsp?CRID=nongovernmental_organizations&OFFID=se1.

  • Corporate Anthropology - The idea of "corporate culture" has obtained particular cultural capital over the last decade. Corporate anthropologists can be hired either as part of an outside consulting firm or, more and more, are on the payroll of corporations themselves. Corporate anthropologists study cultural issues in the workplace, how the culture of a particular workplace is formed or changed, and how corporations can function more efficiently. A few articles that give an idea of what corporate anthropologists do are available below:
