Mission Statement
The Sociology and Anthropology Department faculty are scholars with diverse intellectual interests and complementary expertise who are strongly committed to the liberal arts tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and service. We teach our students the scientific, interpretive, and critical inquiry skills necessary to question what seems to be obvious and to analyze what affects the quality of human life. We encourage students to engage directly with the social world in order to develop a deep and practical understanding of its structure and cultural dynamics. Our mission is to prepare students for a variety of professional careers, further academic study, and lives of active citizenship in the communities where they reside.
