Professor J. Thomas Walker
Emeritus Professor of Sociolopgy
Why I Like Sociology:
Since I took my first course in sociology I have been interested in explaining
social life, especially how people both influence and are shaped by the social,
economic, political and historical circumstances in which they live. It is exciting
to track current trends and examine them in order to find ways to promote a better
future for humankind.
Biography:
Ph.D. in Sociology 1980, St. Louis University
M.A. in Sociology 1966, Roosevelt University
B.A. in Sociology 1964, Greenville College
Interests: European and American sociological theory, social change, sociology
of the future, criminology and criminal justice, psychiatric sociology
Research:
For about the past decade my primary research interests have been in the area of social change and the sociology
of the future. I am interested in the interactive effects of how our current decisions are likely to affect the future
and how our images of the future affect our current decisions. I am presently working on a book length manuscript on
sociology and futures studies.
