2007 MAC Track and Field Championships Preview
SELINSGROVE, PA – For the sixth straight year, the field house at Susquehanna University's James W. Garrett Sports Complex will host the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, as 10 schools will compete in 17 men's and 17 women's events.
The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. with action in four field events and will culminate with the 4x400-meter relays at 5:30 p.m.
Admission to the meet is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for students. Children under 6 will be admitted free of charge. There is a limited amount of spectator seating available so fans are advised to bring their own seats.
MEN'S PREVIEW
Elizabethtown earned its fourth consecutive MAC Indoor Track and Field team championship in 2006 by winning two individual and three relay events, piling up 129 points to outscore Susquehanna (81) and Moravian (76).
Four defending event champions and three past champions will look to return to the top of the medal stand in 2007, led by two-time defending champions Kevin Clark of Elizabethtown (pole vault), Ozzie Brown of Moravian (long jump) and Nathaniel Tussey of Moravian (55-meter hurdles), while Lebanon Valley's Nick Orfanella will attempt to win his second straight MAC title in the weight throw.
Past champions in the field include Mike Marr of Susquehanna (high jump, 2005), Patrick Donovan of Elizabethtown (800 meters, 2005) and Randy Anderson of Juniata (55 meters, 2005).
Donovan set the MAC record of 1:54.42 when he won gold in 2005, while Clark set the conference record in the pole vault at 16 feet, 3 ½ inches last year.
WOMEN'S PREVIEW
The Elizabethtown women swept all four relays en route to their first team title in 2006, amassing 130 points to edge out Susquehanna (116) and Messiah (73), while 10-time defending team champion Moravian slipped to fourth with 71 points.
Seven athletes return as event champions in a total of 10 events from last year's meet, including reigning Most Outstanding Performer Lauren Lucci of Widener, who has won two straight gold medals in the shot put and was the 2006 champion in the weight throw.
Moravian senior Erin Recker is attempting to win her fourth straight gold in the 55 meters and her third straight title in the 200 meters, while Susquehanna senior Emily Lepley is also looking for her third straight gold in the 55-meter hurdles and second consecutive 400-meter championship.
Other reigning event champions including Kelsey Buffenmyer of Juniata (high jump), Kathleen McCarron of Moravian (long jump), Tiffany Kulp of Elizabethtown (800 meters) and Heather Matta of Susquehanna (mile). Sarah Burkhardt of Susquehanna was the 2005 champion in the high jump before being dethroned by Buffenmyer last season.
