THREE FIRST-TEAM REPEATS AMONG SEVEN MAC FOOTBALL ALL-STARS
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Three Susquehanna University football players are among seven Crusaders named to the Middle Atlantic Conference football All-Star team, as voted on by the conference’s 11 head coaches and released Tuesday. Record-setting sophomore split end Mark Bartosic was joined by senior linebacker Troy Sosnovik and junior defensive back Antonio Nash as first-team selections for the second straight season, while senior defensive end Dominick DeSteno was a second-team choice for the second time in his career. Earning honorable mention selection were junior offensive tackle Rob Acheson, junior tight end John Smith and freshman fullback Jason Eck. As a group, the seven helped the Crusaders to a 4-6 overall record (4-5 MAC) under 12th-year head coach Steve Briggs. Bartosic (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy H.S.), who has earned first-team All-Star honors in each of his first two seasons, set Susquehanna single-season records with 72 catches for 1,190 yards and finished second in the MAC in both categories. Bartosic, who also caught 13 touchdowns to place second in the conference, established Susquehanna career records for receptions (123), yards (2,318) and touchdowns (28) during the season. Sosnovik (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere H.S.), a two-time first-team All-Star, led the Crusaders with 113 tackles (85 solo) to finish third in the MAC in tackles. He posted double figures in tackles six times during the season and led the Crusaders in stops five times in 10 games. Sosnovik finished his career with 280 tackles to rank 11th in school history. Nash (Washington, DC/Springbrook, MD H.S.), who has earned first-team All-Star honors in each of his first three seasons, made a team-high six interceptions to tie for fourth in the MAC with an average of 0.6 per game. He finished the year with 76 tackles (53 solo) to rank second on the team and 19th in the conference, and tied for sixth in the MAC with 17 passes defensed. Nash’s 19 career interceptions are tied for third in Susquehanna history. DeSteno (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Bergen Catholic H.S.), a second-team All-Star in 1999, returned to the squad after a one-year absence and was a second-team choice despite missing two games with a knee injury. He made just 28 tackles in eight games, but led the Crusaders with 5 ½ sacks and finished second on the team with 10 tackles for loss. Acheson (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown H.S.) started all 10 games at left tackle and keyed a unit that allowed Crusader quarterbacks to pass for 245.6 yards per game (third in the MAC). Overall, Susquehanna ranked fifth in the MAC in total offense with an average of 356.5 yards per game. Eck (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock H.S.) led the Crusaders with 582 yards and eight touchdowns on 154 carries, ranking eighth overall in the MAC and second among conference freshmen in rushing. Eck, who ran for a school record-tying four touchdowns in a 40-13 win over Lebanon Valley in the season finale, also caught eight passes for 89 yards. Smith (Orland Park, IL/Providence Catholic H.S.), a second-team All-Star last season, equaled his career high with 15 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns. He caught at least one pass in seven of the Crusaders’ 10 games, including career bests of five receptions and 82 yards against Lycoming on September 15.
