WOMEN’S TENNIS GEARS UP FOR MAC INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After the team’s most successful season since 1988, several members of the Susquehanna University women’s tennis team will have the chance to make history this weekend at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships at Lebanon Valley College.

The Crusaders will send six players to the conference tournament, which opens on Friday with first, second and third round action. Semifinals and finals competition in both singles and doubles will take place on Saturday.

Susquehanna, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Bob Jordan, finished with an 8-3 record in 2001 and qualified for the MAC playoffs for the first time in 13 years. However, the Crusaders have never claimed a singles or doubles champion in MAC tourney action.

Sophomore Tara McHugh (Jeannette, PA/Hempfield Area H.S.) and freshman Sarah Lampe (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Christian), the top two singles players on the team during the season, will compete in singles for the Crusaders this weekend.

McHugh finished with an 8-3 record this season at number-one singles and has a career record of 19-7, tying her for 10th place on Susquehanna’s career wins list. Lampe played number-two singles in her rookie season and posted a 7-4 mark.

In doubles, junior Kelly Moritz (York, PA/York Suburban H.S.) and freshman Devon Gross (South Sterling, PA/Wallenpaupack H.S.) will team up along with the freshman duo of Leah Rice (Ottsville, PA/Pennridge H.S.) and Jen Moyer (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge H.S.).

Moritz and Gross played together just once this season, earning an 8-4 win over Widener on September 8. However, Gross finished the year with a 7-4 doubles record playing primarily with junior Carly Kellett.

While the team of Rice and Moyer did not see any match action during the 2001 season, they are familiar with each other after having played doubles together at Pennridge High School.
