Women's Tennis to Battle FDU-Madison in MAC Semis
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Despite having no seniors in the regular lineup, the Susquehanna University women’s tennis team has qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs for the first time since 1988 and will travel to FDU-Madison for a MAC semifinal match at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The Crusaders (7-2 overall entering Tuesday’s match with Scranton) posted a 6-1 record in the Commonwealth Conference, finishing second to Moravian. The Lady Greyhounds will host Lycoming in the other semifinal on Wednesday, with the winners meeting Saturday for the MAC title. The Crusaders have never won a MAC overall crown, but earned Northern Division titles in both 1985 and 1988. Susquehanna, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Bob Jordan, is led by sophomore Tara McHugh (Jeannette, PA/Hempfield Area H.S.), who has posted a 7-2 record this season and an 18-6 career mark at number-one singles. Freshman Sarah Lampe (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Christian) has played number-two singles and recorded a 6-3 mark in her rookie campaign. Junior Kelly Moritz (York, PA/York Suburban H.S.) has posted a 3-3 mark at number-three singles, while freshman Devon Gross (South Sterling, PA/Wallenpaupack H.S.) has gone 3-3 at number-four singles and 5-4 overall this season. Where the Crusaders have particularly excelled has been number-five and number-six singles, where junior Carly Kellett (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley H.S.) and junior Cindy Schlier (Newtown, CT/Newtown H.S.) have combined for a 16-1 overall mark. Kellett has posted an 8-0 overall record, with five of the wins coming at number-five singles, while Schlier has gone 8-1 this season and 7-1 at number-six singles. In doubles, the McHugh/Lampe duo has combined for a 4-4 mark at number-one doubles while Gross and Kellett are 4-3 at number-two doubles. Susquehanna has received solid play from the number-three team of juniors Kait Gillis (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity H.S.) and Emily Kurtz (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys H.S.), who are 6-1 for the season.
