Field Hockey, Women's Soccer Vie for Commonwealth Titles

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University field hockey and women’s soccer teams will travel to Messiah on Saturday in search of each squad’s first-ever Commonwealth Conference championship.

The seventh-ranked Crusader field hockey squad (17-2) battles the second-ranked Falcons (14-3) at 1 p.m. while the women’s soccer team (8-7-3) will face the fifth-ranked Falcons (17-0-1) at 5 p.m.

Admission to each game at Messiah is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for students.

For the second time in three days on Wednesday, Susquehanna’s women’s soccer team defeated Elizabethtown 2-1 to advance to Saturday’s championship game. The Crusaders, playing in their first-ever postseason game in the program’s nine-year history, scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute as sophomore Lindsay Nevins netted her sixth of the season.

Meanwhile, the Crusader field hockey team knocked off Lebanon Valley 2-1 in its semifinal game on Wednesday to move into the conference championship game for the first time since 1993. Senior Leah Bailor (Sunbury, PA/Middleburg H.S.) fired home her 22nd goal of the season on a penalty stroke with 26:35 remaining in the game to give Susquehanna its school-record 17th win of the season.

The winners of Saturday’s title games will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships. Susquehanna’s field hockey team made NCAA appearances in 1993 and 1999 while the women’s soccer team has never appeared in the NCAA’s.
