Field Hockey, Women's Soccer to Host Commonwealth Playoffs
SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University field hockey and women’s soccer teams have earned the number-two seeds in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs and will host semifinal games on Wednesday. The women’s soccer team (7-7-3 overall, 4-1-2 Commonwealth) is making its first postseason appearance in the program’s nine-year history and will face Elizabethtown (9-9-1 overall, 3-2-2 Commonwealth) at 1:30 p.m. on the West Field, while the seventh-ranked field hockey team (16-2 overall, 6-1 Commonwealth) will battle 15th-ranked Lebanon Valley (12-7 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) at 4:30 p.m. at Lopardo Stadium. Admission to each game is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for students. Susquehanna’s women’s soccer team secured second place with a 2-1 win over Elizabethtown on Monday afternoon, the Crusaders’ first win over the Blue Jays in nine games. Elizabethtown won four consecutive Commonwealth championships from 1996-99. Fourth-year head coach Jim Findlay has relied on a balanced attack led by five goals apiece from sophomore Lindsay Nevins (Basking Ridge, NJ/Gill St. Bernards) and freshman Alecia Gold (Turbotville, PA/Warrior Run H.S.). Junior goalkeeper Melissa Karschner (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville H.S.) has posted a 7-5-2 record with a 1.20 goals against average and five shutouts. Sixth-ranked Messiah will host Lebanon Valley in the other semifinal, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at the top remaining seed. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Crusader field hockey team, which broke the program’s 1999 record of 15 wins with a 6-1 victory at Moravian on Saturday, will look to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Flying Dutchmen in the 2000 Commonwealth semifinals. Susquehanna has not won a conference playoff game since defeating FDU-Madison 1-0 on October 27, 1993. Susquehanna’s 27th-year head coach Connie Harnum has looked to the one-two punch of senior Leah Bailor (Sunbury, PA/Middleburg H.S.) and junior Jodi Dottery (Zionville, PA/Emmaus H.S.) to trigger the offense all season. Bailor has set school records with 21 goals, 11 assists and 53 points while Dottery has tallied 16 goals and four assists for 36 points. Senior goalkeeper Katie Hess (Darnestown, MD/Connelly School of Holy Child) has recorded a 1.16 goals against average and four shutouts in 18 games. Second-ranked Messiah will host 20th-ranked Elizabethtown in the other semifinal, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at the top remaining seed. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
