Susquehanna Sports in Midst of Unusual Win Streak
SELINSGROVE, PA – As the campus heads into its mid-term break, the Susquehanna University athletic program is enjoying a run of victories that may rank among the most unusual in the country. Since the women’s tennis team dropped a 5-4 match to Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian early in the afternoon of September 28, the Crusaders have won 19 consecutive games in six different sports. Leading the way are the men’s soccer and women’s tennis teams with four straight wins, while the field hockey, women’s soccer and volleyball squads have picked up three consecutive victories and the football team has added back-to-back wins. In fact, if you include the field hockey’s current streak of 10 straight wins since a loss at McDaniel in the season opener on August 31, the six teams have combined for 26 straight wins overall heading into this weekend’s action. On Saturday, the field hockey team will visit Moravian and the volleyball team will battle at Alvernia while the men’s soccer team hosts King’s. The football team will have the toughest test of the day with a Middle Atlantic Conference game at sixth-ranked Widener. Even the men’s golf team, whose results along with men’s and women’s cross country are not factored into the winning streak, has been victorious over the last two weeks with a first-place finish at the Gettysburg Fall Invitational. Overall, the Susquehanna fall sports teams have combined for a 48-20-1 record (.703 winning percentage), with five of the six squads owning a .500 or better record and three teams (men’s soccer, women’s soccer and field hockey) undefeated in Commonwealth Conference play.
