Gibboney Named Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week

SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University freshman free safety Ben Gibboney is this week’s recipient of the team’s Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Steak House along Routes 11 & 15 in Shamokin Dam.

Gibboney (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon Area H.S.), in his third career start and second as the regular free safety, was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after he made a career-high 11 tackles and picked off two passes as Susquehanna held Juniata to 85 yards below their season average in a 45-17 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Gibboney, whose father Tom was the Eagles’ head coach from 1995-97, recorded 10 solo stops and helped the Crusaders limit Juniata to just 18 completions in 48 attempts for 184 yards. For the season, Gibboney ranks fifth among Susquehanna defenders with 30 tackles.

The Golden Corral will donate a check for $100 in the name of Gibboney to the charity of his choice. Now in their sixth year of sponsorship of the Gus Weber Player of the Week award, Golden Corral has donated $5,300 to charity in the names of Susquehanna players.

The Player of the Week award is named after former Susquehanna University president Gustave Weber, who served as president of Susquehanna for more than 18 years and was a former standout player at Wagner College. He was an avid booster of Crusader athletics, and in particular the football team, which he coached for the final two games of the 1965 season.

Gibboney will be the guest speaker at Friday’s Quarterback Club luncheon, which begins at noon in the Shearer-Weber Dining Room in the Degenstein Campus Center. He will also be the guest on the Coach’s Corner Show, which can be heard each Saturday beginning 30 minutes before kickoff.

The Crusaders (4-3 overall, 4-2 MAC) will travel to King’s (5-2 overall, 5-1 MAC) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
