Bartosic Named MAC Offensive Player of the Year

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University junior split end Mark Bartosic has been named the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, one of seven Crusaders to earn MAC All-Conference honors in voting by the league’s 11 head coaches.

Senior cornerback Antonio Nash joined Bartosic as a first-team selection and becomes just the sixth player in MAC history to earn first-team All-Conference honors four times. Nash was also a second-team selection as a return specialist.

Senior quarterback Mike Bowman, sophomore fullback Jason Eck, sophomore offensive lineman Tom Goodwin, senior tight end John Smith and junior defensive end Adam Summers were named to the MAC second team after helping the Crusaders to a 5-5 overall record and a fifth-place tie in the conference with a 5-4 MAC mark.

Bartosic (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy H.S.) led the MAC in receptions (74), yards (1,202) and touchdowns (14) to become the first Crusader to earn Player of the Year honors since Matt Wichlinski in 1998.

A three-time MAC first-team All-Star, Bartosic has established school records with 197 catches, 3,420 yards, 42 receiving touchdowns and 270 points during his first three seasons at Susquehanna.

Nash (Washington, DC/Springbrook, MD H.S.) finished with a team-high 62 tackles, broke up eight passes and made a pair of interceptions this season. He wrapped up his four-year career with the Crusaders with 21 interceptions, the second-highest total in program history, and 262 tackles.

Nash led the MAC in kickoff returns with an average 26.6 yards per runback, including three returns of 59 yards or longer. He also finished third in the conference in punt return average at 9.4 yards per return. In four seasons, Nash ranks fourth in Susquehanna history with 59 punt returns for 622 yards and fifth in punt return average at 10.5 yards per return.

In addition, Nash finished third in career kick returns (47) and yards (1,050) despite not returning a kickoff until his sophomore season. His career kickoff return average of 22.3 yards ranks sixth in Crusader history.

Bowman (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy H.S.) earned All-Conference honors for the first time in his record-setting four years with the Crusaders after completing 165 passes in 296 attempts for 2,212 yards and 17 touchdowns while throwing just nine interceptions. He finished third in the MAC in pass efficiency with a rating of 131.4 while ranking fifth in total offense at 212.6 yards per game.

A four-year starter with a career record of 19-16 in 35 starts, Bowman established program records for completions (609), attempts (1,169), yards (8,160) and touchdowns (63), ranking second in MAC history in completions, attempts and yards while placing fifth in career touchdowns.

Eck (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock H.S.) led the MAC with 16 rushing touchdowns, the second-highest total in program history, while gaining 524 yards on 126 carries (4.2 average). A short-yardage specialist, 10 of his 16 touchdowns came on runs of three yards or less.

Goodwin (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock H.S.) started all 10 games at left guard and helped the Crusaders rank fourth in the MAC in passing offense (226.3 yards per game) and in total offense (368.5 yards per game). As a unit, the offensive line allowed just 22 sacks on the season and allowed the team to lead the MAC in both third-down (41.8 percent) and fourth-down (57.1 percent) conversions.

Smith (Langhorne, PA/Providence Catholic, IL H.S.), a two-time second-team All-Conference tight end, finished the season with nine catches for 123 yards (13.7 average). Smith, who did not miss a start in four years with the Crusaders, finished his career with 51 catches for 691 yards and six touchdowns.

Summers (Abbottstown, PA/Mercersburg Academy) returned from a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2001 season to start all 10 games at left defensive end and earn second-team All-MAC honors. He finished the season with 38 tackles, including nine for loss and a team-high five sacks.
