Football to Play First On-Campus Night Game
SELINSGROVE, PA – For the first time in the program’s 104-season history, the Susquehanna University football team will play an on-campus night football game on Saturday evening as FDU-Florham visits Nicholas A. Lopardo Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Middle Atlantic Conference action. In addition to a state-of-the-art Pro Grass synthetic playing surface, lights were installed this summer at Lopardo Stadium, which opened prior to the 2000 season. Susquehanna is the third MAC school to have a lighted field, joining Albright and FDU-Florham. While the Crusaders have never played a night game on campus, Susquehanna has hosted football under the lights in its history. The team played one “home” game at old Sunbury High School each year from 1960 to 1962 and played games at nearby Selinsgrove High School in both 1961 and 1980. Susquehanna’s last game at Selinsgrove High School came on November 14, 1980, when visiting Wilkes rallied for a 9-7 victory on the strength of a 31-yard field goal by Vince Savoca with :05 left. Ironically, FDU-Florham was the opponent for Susquehanna’s most recent night game, a 48-12 Crusader road victory on October 21, 1983. Susquehanna would have played a night game at Alfred on September 5, 1998, but the game was called off by Alfred administrators following a hazing incident involving members of the Saxons team. Overall, Susquehanna has a 12-3-1 record in night games since 1960, including a 3-0 mark at FDU-Florham.
