Women's Soccer Nets Four All-Stars, Findlay Coach of the Year
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A program-record four Susquehanna University women’s soccer players have been selected All-Commonwealth Conference in voting by the league’s eight head coaches, the conference announced Wednesday. In addition, fourth-year head coach Jim Findlay was selected Coach of the Year after leading the Crusaders to the first playoff berth in the program’s nine-year history and an appearance in the Commonwealth Conference finals. Junior goalkeeper Melissa Karschner, junior defender Lauren Haner and sophomore forward Lindsay Nevins were all named first-team All-Conference while senior midfielder Kristin Abernethy was a second-team selection. As a group, they helped the Crusaders to an 8-8-3 overall record and second place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 4-1-2 league mark. Susquehanna defeated Elizabethtown 2-1 in the league semifinals before falling 3-0 to NCAA quarterfinalist Messiah in the finals. Karschner (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville H.S.) compiled an 8-6-2 record with a 1.30 goals against average and five shutouts in 16 starts and finished fifth in the conference in both goals against average and in save percentage with an .819 mark. In seven conference games, Karschner posted a 4-1-2 record with a 0.78 goals against average and four shutouts. In three seasons, Karschner has fashioned a 27-18-3 record with 13 shutouts and a 1.57 goals against average, recording nearly half of the program’s 62 all-time victories. Haner (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock H.S.) was the leader of a Crusader defense that allowed one goal or less in 10 of the team’s final 13 games. She also scored two goals, including the lone tally in a 1-0 win at Widener on September 21. Nevins (Basking Ridge, NJ/Gill-St. Bernards), the league’s Rookie of the Year last season, led the Crusaders with six goals and 12 points in 19 games during the 2002 season. Three of Nevins’ six goals were game-winners, including her tie-breaking tally with 4:13 left in the Crusaders’ 2-1 win over Elizabethtown in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals. Abernethy (Wescosville, PA/Emmaus H.S.) tallied two goals in 18 games while playing a solid defensive role in the midfield. She concluded her Susquehanna career ranked fourth in program history in goals (15), assists (8) and points (38). Findlay helped the Crusaders to the postseason after the squad started the season with an 0-4-1 overall record. He is the winningest coach in program history with a 34-29-4 record through four years, including three straight non-losing seasons.
