Women's Tennis Preps for MAC Championships
SELINSGROVE, PA – Six members of the Susquehanna University women’s tennis team will be in action at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individuals Tournament at Drew University on Friday and Saturday. The Crusader contingent includes junior Tara McHugh and freshman Danielle Dormer in singles action along with the doubles teams of senior Carly Kellett and sophomore Sarah Lampe as well as the duo of senior Kelly Moritz and junior Tamara Cypress. McHugh (Jeannette, PA/Hempfield Area H.S.) is expected to be the tournament’s top seed after finishing the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record at number-one singles for the Crusaders. McHugh advanced to the semifinals last year as the number-three seed and was a quarterfinalist as a freshman. McHugh’s 33 career wins against just seven losses leave her one victory shy of matching the program record of 34 set from 1984 to 1987 by Marge Guckes. She will be seeking to become the first Susquehanna women’s tennis player to win a MAC singles title. Dormer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East H.S.) played number-two singles for the Crusaders during her rookie season and finished with a 10-2 record. She needs just one victory to equal McHugh’s record of 11 wins as a freshman which was set two years ago. In doubles, Kellett (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley H.S.) and Lampe (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Christian) teamed up in each of the Crusaders’ final two regular-season matches and earned victories. While Kellett, who advanced to the MAC quarterfinals in both her freshman and sophomore seasons, had not seen doubles action this season until the final two matches, Lampe compiled an 8-3 record overall in doubles during the season playing primarily with McHugh. Last year, Lampe played singles and was knocked out in the tournament’s opening round. The tandem of Moritz (York, PA/York Suburban H.S.) and Cypress (Indianapolis, IN/Richmond H.S.) has been the Crusaders’ best doubles team this season with a 10-1 record. Moritz was a quarterfinalist with Kellett in 2000 before being eliminated in the second round last season, while Cypress will be making her MAC championship debut. Susquehanna finished with a 10-2 regular-season record and third in the Commonwealth Conference with a 5-2 league mark under ninth-year head coach Bob Jordan.
