McHugh, Dormer Earn Women's Tennis Honors
SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University junior Tara McHugh has been named the Commonwealth Conference women’s tennis Player of the Year while freshman Danielle Dormer was selected Rookie of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches. McHugh (Jeannette, PA/Hempfield Area H.S.) became the first Crusader since Donna Gotshall in 1979 to win the Middle Atlantic Conference singles championship with a straight-set victory over Lycoming’s Cricket Temple in Saturday’s finals at Drew University. McHugh finished the season with a perfect 16-0 record to set the Susquehanna season record for singles victories. She also improved her career record to 37-7 after breaking the program record of 34 wins set by Marge Guckes from 1984-87 during the MAC tournament. Dormer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East H.S.), the Crusaders’ number-two singles play during the regular season, advanced to the second round of the MAC tournament and finished the season with an 11-3 record. Her 11 victories equal the freshman record set by McHugh in 2000 when she was also named Rookie of the Year. The Crusaders finished the 2002 season with a 10-2 record under ninth-year head coach Bob Jordan.
