McHugh Named Women's Tennis Player of the Week

SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University junior Tara McHugh has been selected by the Commonwealth Conference women’s tennis coaches as the league’s Player of the Week for the week ending October 5.

McHugh (Jeannette, PA/Hempfield Area H.S.) improved to 11-0 on the season with three victories last week, including a 7-5, 6-3 win over previously unbeaten Cricket Temple of Lycoming to spark the Crusaders to their first victory over the Warriors since 1993, a 5-4 win on Wednesday afternoon.

McHugh’s victory over Juniata’s Liz Osche on Saturday tied the school single-season record of 11 wins set by Dee Mowery in 1985 and matched by Marge Guckes in 1987 and McHugh in 2000.

In her three-year career, McHugh, who has played every match at number-one singles, has a record of 32-7 to rank second in program history behind Guckes’ 34 wins from 1984-87. She is expected to be the top seed in singles at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships at Drew on October 18-19, looking to become the first Crusader women’s player to win a MAC singles crown.

The Crusaders (9-2), who finished third in the Commonwealth Conference with a 5-2 mark, will close out the 2002 season on Tuesday at Scranton beginning at 4 p.m.
