Gibboney, Kodack Share Gus Weber Player of the Week Award
SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University sophomore free safety Ben Gibboney and senior linebacker/punter Dennis Kodack are co-winners of the team’s Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Steak House along Routes 11 & 15 in Shamokin Dam. Gibboney (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon Area H.S.) earned Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career after intercepting two passes in the second half and forcing a fumble as the Crusaders held the high-powered Pioneer offense to just 247 yards of total offense on the afternoon to snap Widener’s 14-game home winning streak. Kodack (Paxinos, PA/Shamokin Area H.S.) was selected MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors as he averaged 36.3 yards on six punts, including four straight inside the 20 yard line in the second half, to keep Widener pinned in its territory all day. Kodack’s punts left Widener starting at its 2, 14, 18 and 9 while trying to come back from a 21-6 halftime deficit. For the season, Gibboney leads the Crusaders with 13 tackles, including 11 solo, and is among the MAC leaders with four pass breakups in two games while Kodack is seventh in the MAC in punting with an average of 37.6 yards on eight punts, with five of those eight punts downed the opponents’ 20-yard line. The Golden Corral will donate checks for $50 each in the names of Gibboney and Kodack to the charities of their choice. Through seven years of sponsorship of the Gus Weber Player of the Week award, Golden Corral has donated $5,800 to charity in the names of Susquehanna players. The Player of the Week award is named after former Susquehanna University president Gustave Weber, who served as president of Susquehanna for more than 18 years and was a former standout player at Wagner College. He was an avid booster of Crusader athletics, and in particular the football team, which he coached for the final two games of the 1965 season. The Crusaders (1-1 overall, 1-0 MAC) will return home to face Moravian (1-1 overall, 1-1 MAC) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Lopardo Stadium as part of Homecoming.
