Three Crusaders Named All-Conference in Women's Tennis
ANNVILLE, PA – Susquehanna University senior Tara McHugh and sophomore Danielle Dormer have been named first-team All-Commonwealth Conference in women’s tennis as voted upon by the league’s eight head coaches, the conference announced Thursday. Junior Sarah Lampe was a second-team selection as the trio combined for a 21-4 record in singles play and helped the Crusaders finish 6-3 overall and in fourth place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 4-3 league mark under 10th-year head coach Bob Jordan. McHugh (Jeannette, PA/Hempfield Area H.S.), a four-time first-team All-Conference selection, went 6-2 at number-one singles this season and improved her career mark to a school-record 43 wins against just nine losses. She was the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year in 2000 and earned Player of the Year honors in 2002 when she became the first Crusader since 1979 to win the Middle Atlantic Conference singles title. Dormer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East H.S.), the 2002 Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year, earned first-team All-Conference honors for the first time after finishing the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record, improving her career mark to 20-3. Lampe (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Christian) finished 6-2 while playing mostly at number-three singles and completed the season with a career record of 23-9. Messiah’s Deanna Ng was named Player of the Year while Stacy Shapiro of Elizabethtown captured Rookie of the Year honors. Sharing the Coach of the Year award were Sheila Bush of Messiah and Matt Helsel of Elizabethtown. Both McHugh and Dormer will be in singles action at this weekend’s MAC women’s tennis tournament while Lampe will team up with fellow junior Leah Rice in doubles action. The tournament, held at Drew University for the second straight year, begins Friday at 9 a.m. with first, second and third round action. Semifinal and finals action in both singles and doubles will be played Saturday also beginning at 9 a.m.
