Jones, Lunardi Earn MAC Football Honors
SELINSGROVE , PA – A pair of Susquehanna University football players earned Middle Atlantic Conference honors following the Crusaders' 17-10 upset of 23rd-ranked Delaware Valley College on Saturday afternoon.
Junior free safety Eddie Jones was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week while sophomore punter John Lunardi was selected as the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week in helping the Crusaders defeat a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time since 2000.
Jones (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) became the first Crusader since Jeremy Zeisloft in 1996 to intercept three passes in a game. He picked off two passes in the second quarter, the second setting up Susquehanna's first touchdown, then added a third pick late in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. In all, the Crusader defense held Delaware Valley 's offense to 238 yards and forced five turnovers.
Lunardi (West Chester, PA/Henderson) punted five times for an average of 37.6 yards per punt. Three of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line, while his longest punt of the day traveled 47 yards late in the fourth quarter to force the Aggies to start from their 21-yard line.
The Crusaders (2-5 overall, 2-4 MAC) host FDU-Florham on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Lopardo Stadium.
