SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University sophomore linebacker Dominick DeSteno (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Bergen Catholic H.S.) is the NCAA Division III Defensive Player of the Week according to Don Hansen's Football Gazette, and is on this week's national Team of the Week by D3football.com. He is also made the Division III Defensive Honor Roll by USA Football (www.usafootball.com), and is the team's Gus Weber Crusader Football Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Restaurant, for his standout play in his team's 42-6 non-conference rout at Dickinson last Saturday.
A Division I-AA transfer, DeSteno had seven tackles (five solo), including two for losses of 14 yards, a sack, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries — returning one 40 yards for a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage. He also helped preserve Susquehanna's lead with Dickinson on the Crusader 19, coming free on a blitz to sack the quarterback and force a fumble which sophomore defensive end Frank Hanlon (Mahanoy City/Mahanoy Area H.S.) returned 55 yards.
For the season, DeSteno is tied for third on the team in tackles with 19 (11 solo), and is second in both tackles for loss (4 for 24 yards) and sacks (two-and-a-half).
"We wanted to get off to a fast start and Dominick really helped provide that. We think we have really improved our defense this season and he's one of the reasons why," said 10th-year Crusader head coach Steve Briggs.
The recipient of the team's Gus Weber Player of the Week has a check of $100 from the Golden Corral Family Restaurant donated to the charity of his choice. DeSteno has chosen Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Central Susquehanna Valley.
DeSteno is a history major and the son of Stefano and RoseAnn DeSteno of Franklin Lakes.
At 3-0 and ranked 29th in Division III by Don Hansen's Football Gazette, Susquehanna will play a key Middle Atlantic Conference game this Saturday at 2-1 Wilkes. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
