SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University freshman inner Leah Bailor of Richfield (Middleburg H.S.) is the MAC Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week. She led her team offensively as it won all three games last week, including a 2-1 upset Saturday at seventh-ranked William Smith.
A 1998 Pennsylvania All-State selection as a high school senior, Bailor scored three goals and had two assists for eight points in the week. She had a goal and an assist in the team's home opening 2-0 win over Scranton last Tuesday. She assisted on a goal as the Crusaders pulled the upset at 1997 NCAA Division III national champion William Smith Saturday. Bailor then scored two goals in Sunday's 3-0 rout of St. Lawrence in the second game of the William Smith Invitational. With Sunday's game tied 0-0 at the half, Bailor took the ball to start the second half and drove through the St. Lawrence defense for an unassisted goal with just :17 gone.
"Leah just took the ball right through the defense for that goal (vs. St. Lawrence) – nobody else touched it," said Susquehanna head coach Connie Harnum, who is now in her 25th season. "She's just so focused, and so strong, and so good at out-maneuvering the defense – that's what makes her so successful."
For the season, Bailor leads both the team and the MAC Commonwealth Conference in goals with six (1.20 per game), assists with four (0.80 per game), and points with 16 (3.20 per game). She has scored in all five games this season.
Now off to a 5-0 start, Susquehanna will try and tie its school record for longest win streak (6 games, 1993) in its next game at King's (4-2), Thursday at 4 p.m.
