SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University freshman quarterback Mike Bowman (Northumberland/Shikellamy H.S.) is on the Middle Atlantic Conference Honor Roll and also the team's Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Restaurant in Shamokin Dam, for his performance in Susquehanna's 28-7 win over Widener Saturday.
Making just his second collegiate start, Bowman had his best game at Susquehanna –completing 18 of 28 passes for 216 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a game which pitted the MAC Commonwealth League's two unbeaten teams. He also ran seven times for 29 yards. Bowman threw scoring passes of nine, 23 and six yards -- two of them in the first half as Susquehanna built a 21-0 halftime lead.
"He's (Bowman) a winner – there's no question about it. He's poised and just had a great day Saturday. He's made a difference in our offense," said 10th-year head coach Steve Briggs.
A 1998 Pennsylvania All-State Big School second-team selection, Bowman has now completed 55 of 115 passes (47.8%) on the season for 661 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. He ranks ninth in the MAC in passing efficiency (104.6 rating) and 10th in total offense (110.3 yards per game). Bowman is one of four freshmen skill position starters on offense for Susquehanna.
He is a mathematics major and the son of Rich and Jan Bowman of Northumberland.
The recipient of the team's Gus Weber Player of the Week has a check of $100 from Golden Corral donated to the charity of his choice. Bowman will announce his charity while being the guest speaker at the team's weekly Quarterback Club Luncheon this Friday at noon in the Shearer-Weber Dining Rooms of the Degenstein Campus Center.
Now 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the MAC and 2-0 in the Commonwealth League, Susquehanna has already secured its 14th-straight non-losing season. The Crusaders will try and post their second-straight winning season when they host league rival Lebanon Valley this Saturday for Youth Football/United Way of Central Susquehanna Valley Day.
At that game, all youth football players and their coaches from teams high school aged and younger will be admitted to the game free of charge. Susquehanna will also be recognizing the children and youth who are served by United Way agencies and who have the opportunity to interact with students at Susquehanna. Because Saturday is national "Make A Difference Day," groups who participated in a service project earlier in the week will also be recognized for their service to the community at next Saturday's game, which is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
