SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University junior halfback Rashonn Drayton (Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic H.S.) is the Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and the team's Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Restaurant in Shamokin Dam. Drayton rushed for a career high 169 yards on 26 carries and scored the five-yard, go-ahead touchdown in overtime as Susquehanna beat MAC rival King's, 27-26, Saturday.
The 6-2, 225-pounder rushed three times for 13 yards in Susquehanna's overtime scoring drive. The performance was the first 100-yard rushing game at Susquehanna for Drayton, who was a Blue Chip All-American and listed as one of the "50 Players to Watch" by USA Today as a prep senior. He also caught two passes for 24 yards in the game.
"He ran like a new man today. Down by the goal line, he was our go-to guy," said 10th-year Crusader head coach Steve Briggs. "He blocked very well too, which a lot of people don't realize. He also sprung Jose (former high school teammate Jose Delgado) on his touchdown (35 yards) too."
The effort has enabled Drayton to become the MAC's rushing leader this season with 194 yards on 38 carries (5.1 avg./97.0 yards per game). He also leads Susquehanna in receiving yardage with 147 yards on five catches (29.4 avg./73.5 yards per game) and a touchdown this season.
The recipient of the team's Gus Weber Player of the Week will have a check of $100 from Golden Corral donated to the charity of his choice. Drayton will announce his choice at the team's weekly Quarterback Club Luncheon Friday at noon.
Drayton is a communications/theatre arts major and the son of Ella and Christian Drayton, Sr., of Allentown.
Susquehanna will take a 2-0 record into this Saturday's 1 p.m. non-conference game at 1-1 Dickinson.
