SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University freshman fullback Jon Dvorshock (Picture Rocks/Hughesville H.S.) is on the Middle Atlantic Conference Honor Roll, and is the team's Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Restaurant in Shamokin Dam, for his performance in Susquehanna's come-from-behind 27-24 win at Moravian Saturday. Dvorshock earns both honors for the first time in his young career.
A converted tailback who took over the team's starting fullback spot in week-four, Dvorshock posted his first collegiate 100-yard rushing game – gaining a game high 110 yards on 17 carries. He also took a third-and-22 shovel pass 64 yards for a touchdown which pulled the team within 24-21 with 6:45 left -- running through five Moravian players on his way to the score. He had three catches for 79 yards on the day, giving him 189 all-purpose yards in just 20 plays (9.5 yards per play).
"Jon is just such a great kid. He's done whatever we've asked of him since day one and has just gone out there and made plays. He's a big reason we're in the position we'll be in Saturday," said 10th-year head coach Steve Briggs.
A first-team Central Susquehanna Conference Division II running back and cornerback at Hughesville last season, the 6-2, 180-pound Dvorshock is third on the team in rushing this season with 309 yards on 71 carries (4.4 avg./38.6 yards per game) and three touchdowns. He's also caught eight passes for 122 yards (15.3 avg.) with the one score, and has returned nine punts for 55 yards – ranking eighth in the conference in punt return average (6.1 avg.).
He is an environmental science major and the son of Lawrence and Judy Dvorshock of Picture Rocks.
The recipient of the team's Gus Weber Player of the Week has a check of $100 from Golden Corral donated to the charity of his choice, and is the speaker at the team's weekly Quarterback Club Luncheon Fridays' at noon in the Shearer-Weber Dining Rooms of the Degenstein Campus Center. Dvorshock will announce his charity later this week.
Now 6-2 overall, 3-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League, Susquehanna needed to win last Saturday's game to keep alive its hopes of winning the overall conference championship and an automatic NCAA Division III playoff berth. The team will play the final game on its current Amos Alonzo Stagg Field – which has been the site of football at Susquehanna for 100 years – this Saturday, hosting arch-rival Lycoming College (7-0) in the apparent conference championship contest at 1 p.m. The overall champion is determined by the outcome of the game between the two league champions. Both Susquehanna and Lycoming presently lead their respective leagues and would be favored in their final league games on November 13.
