Sliding Just One Spot

Crusader Field Hockey Team Ninth in NFHCA D-III Poll After First Loss
Host Messiah in Key MAC Commonwealth Contest Wednesday at 4 p.m.

SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Despite suffering its first loss of the season last week , the Susquehanna University field hockey team fell just one spot to ninth in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III national poll, receiving 384 points from NFHCA member coaches.

Under 25th-year head coach Connie Harnum, the Crusaders saw their school record seven-game win streak come to an end with last Thursday 3-0 loss at Lebanon Valley (9-0), which is now ranked fifth in the national poll. Susquehanna rebounded with a 2-0 win over Villa Julie Saturday and is now 8-1. The team is ranked nationally for just the second time in program history and was eighth nationally the past two weeks – marking its highest ranking ever.

The Crusaders will receive another stiff test Wednesday as they host defending Middle Atlantic Conference champion and 6-5 Messiah in a key 4 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game. The Falcons are 4-0 and tied with Lebanon Valley for first in the MAC Commonwealth, while the Crusaders are 2-1 and tied for third.

Freshmen Leah Bailor (Richfield/Middleburg H.S.) and Katie McKeever (Worcester/ Methacton H.S.) lead Susquehanna offensively. A 1998 all-state selection, Bailor has six goals and five assists for 17 points – tying with junior teammate Ali Hughes (Reading/Muhlenberg H.S.) for first in conference assists (0.56 per game) and ranking second in MAC Commonwealth scoring (1.89 points per game). McKeever leads the team in goals with seven – ranking second in the conference in goals (0.78 per game) and fifth in scoring with 14 points (1.56 per game).

The seniors lead the defense in tri-captain Amanda Reigle (Middleburg/Middleburg H.S.) – a four-year starter – and Taryn Moser (Lewistown/Lewistown H.S.). The defense has posted a team goals-against average of 0.67.

Sophomore Kylie Cook (Huntingdon/Huntingdon H.S.) is the starting goalkeeper and is second in the conference in both goals-against average (0.73) and save percentage (.872).
