SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – The Susquehanna University field hockey team is still ninth in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III national poll, receiving 228 points from NFHCA member coaches.
Under 25th-year head coach Connie Harnum, the Crusaders were 10-1 entering the game today at Wilkes – with their only loss being at top-ranked Lebanon Valley on September 30. The team is 4-1 and behind just Lebanon Valley in the MAC Commonwealth Conference.
The squad is ranked nationally for just the second time in program history and was as high as eighth this season – marking its highest ranking ever.
The Crusaders will try to better both their overall and conference records this Saturday, October 16, as they host Moravian (2-11, 0-5 MAC CC) in a noon contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Cook (Huntingdon/ Huntingdon Area H.S.) is the MAC Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week as she posted a 0.45 goals-against average and .950 save percentage in last week's two conference wins. Despite never being a goalkeeper before last season, she has a 0.48 goals-against average and .898 save percentage which rank second in the MAC Commonwealth Conference in both categories as of a week ago.
The team's only two senior starters have led the defense in front of Cook. Tri-captain Amanda Reigle (Middleburg/Middleburg H.S.) is a four-year starter who has started all 63 games in her career. Taryn Moser (Lewistown/Lewistown H.S.) has been a starter both seasons since electing to come out for the team last year.
Freshmen Leah Bailor (Richfield/Middleburg H.S.) and Katie McKeever (Worcester/ Methacton H.S.) continue to lead the offense. A 1998 all-state selection, Bailor has eight goals and five assists for 21 points – tying with junior teammate Ali Hughes (Reading/Muhlenberg H.S.) for first in conference assists (now 0.45 per game) and ranking second in MAC Commonwealth scoring (now 1.91 points per game). McKeever also has eight goals – ranking second in the conference in goals (0.73 per game) – and is fifth in conference scoring with 16 points (1.45 per game).
