SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University sophomore halfback Isaac Hernandez (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove Area H.S.) is on the Middle Atlantic Conference Honor Roll and is the team's Gus Weber Crusader Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Restaurant in Shamokin Dam, for his performance in Susquehanna's 27-20 win at Albright last Saturday. That win clinched the team its second-straight MAC Commonwealth League championship and its best record since 1992 – finishing 7-3 overall, 4-1 in the league.
Making his first collegiate start at halfback, the 5-9, 180-pound Hernandez tallied a game and career best 264 all-purpose yards with two touchdowns to lead the Crusaders. His 93-yard second quarter kickoff return got the team on the board and rallied it from a 13-0 deficit. Hernandez would go on to return five kicks for 188 yards, also rushing for a team high 59 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown, and catching one pass for 17 yards. His one-yard scoring run tied the game at 20 with 9:36 left in the third quarter.
"Isaac really stepped up on Saturday when we needed it. He gave us a spark with that kickoff return for a touchdown," said 10th-year head coach Steve Briggs. "He showed he belonged out there and certainly set the tone for his final two seasons."
The second-leading rusher all-time at Selinsgrove Area High School, Hernandez played in all 10 games this season and led Susquehanna while finishing third in the MAC in kickoff returns with 16 for a 23.4-yard average. He was fifth on the team in rushing with 78 yards on 24 carries (3.3 avg.) and two touchdowns, also catching the one pass for 17 yards. He accounted for 128 all-purpose yards in Susquehanna's 20-6 junior varsity win over Juniata on October 25 – rushing for 54 yards on 15 carries.
He is a Spanish major and the son of Shirley and Aminadab Cintron. The recipient of the team's Gus Weber Player of the Week has a check of $100 from Golden Corral donated to the charity of his choice. Hernandez has not announced his charity yet. Since agreeing to sponsor the Player of the Week program, Golden Corral has donated $2,400 to charity.
