SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University sophomores Kim Anderson (now from Baytown, Texas, but originally from Orefield/Parkland H.S.) and Sarah Lauro (Collegeville/Villa Maria Academy) are the MAC Commonwealth Conference Women's Soccer and Women's Volleyball Players of the Week respectively.
A starting forward, Anderson scored an unassisted goal with five minutes left in regulation to tie Saturday's home opener, and then won it on another unassisted goal with just 5:48 left in the second overtime as Susquehanna scored the 3-2 upset of Franklin & Marshall. On the first goal, Anderson took a pass on the left wing, beat her defender to the inside and then put a low shot by the sprawling goalkeeper, who had come out to cut down the angle. On the game-winner, she took a pass on the right wing, dribbled past the defender marking her into the box, and then blasted a left-footed shot just under the cross bar in the middle of the goal.
The goals were the first two of the season for Anderson, who set the Susquehanna school single-season records for goals and points with 12 goals and 27 points last season as a freshman. She still leads the team in scoring with the two goals for four points this season.
"Saturday's play is the way we know Kim can play and we need to see her play like that each time out," said first-year Susquehanna head coach Jim Findlay.
Susquehanna fell to 1-3 on the season with a 2-0 loss at Misericordia Monday. Anderson will be coming close to home Saturday as the Crusaders play their MAC Commonwealth opener with an 11:30 a.m. match at Moravian.
Anderson is a business major and the daughter Guynn and Alan Anderson.
A 5-11 middle blocker, Lauro made the All-Tournament Team at last weekend's Coast Guard Academy Tournament while leading her team to a second-place finish. It was the second-straight week she earned all-tournament team honors, also earning them at the Franklin & Marshall Scramble Tournament the previous Saturday. For the weekend, she posted a team best .380 hitting percentage while averaging 2.50 kills and recording a team best 14 blocks (nine solo) and 11 service aces. During the 3-2 week, she hit .379 while averaging 2.29 kills, 0.94 blocks, 1.76 digs and 0.65 service aces per game. She leads the team and is fourth in the Commonwealth Conference in blocks with 26 (20 solo/0.96 per game), and first on the team and fifth in the conference in kills with 68 (2.52 per game). She is also second on the team in hitting percentage at .287, also ranking fourth in the conference in that category. She is also second on the team in service aces with 14 (0.52 per game), and fifth in digs with 39 (1.44 per game).
"Sarah is the hardest worker at practice every day and that's why she's finding success," said seventh-year Crusader head coach Bill Switala.
Susquehanna is now 5-3 overall entering its Commonwealth Conference opener Tuesday as it hosts 17-time defending MAC champion and nationally-ranked Juniata at 7 p.m.
Lauro is an elementary-education major at Susquehanna, and the daughter of James and Louise Lauro.
