SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Thirty-five Susquehanna University fall sports student-athletes are on the 1999 Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll in their respective sports.
To qualify for the MAC Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must have cumulative grade-point averages of 3.2 or better (out of a 4.0 scale) and sophomore eligibility, while completing their athletic season in good standing.
The 7-3 MAC Commonwealth League champion Crusader football team has the most Academic Honor Roll selections with nine. Seniors making the team are offensive lineman Aaron Aukema (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional H.S.) and split end/quarterback Andy Berwager (Hanover/South Western H.S.). Junior Academic Honor Roll members include fullback Ryan Cidzik (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), linebacker Mike DiNorscia (Downingtown/Downingtown H.S.), offensive tackle P.J. Peca (Barnesville/Mahanoy Area H.S.) and center Dave Wonderlick (Shenandoah/Shenandoah Valley H.S.). Sophomores earning academic honors are defensive tackle John Hoffman (Parkland/Parkland H.S.), punter/split end Ryan Hollis (Mifflin/Juniata H.S.), and center/tackle Matt Shaffer (Brookville/Brookville H.S.).
The Susquehanna field hockey team had its best season ever — finishing with a school record 15-4 record which included the program’s first win in the NCAA Tournament — and it had six players on the MAC Academic Field Hockey Honor Roll. Senior tri-captain and back Amanda Reigle (Middleburg/Middleburg H.S.) was joined by junior tri-captain and wing Ali Hughes (Reading/Muhlenberg H.S.); and four sophomores in goalkeeper Kylie Cook (Huntingdon/Huntingdon H.S.), midfielder Jen Houck (Reading/Muhlenberg H.S.), back Laurie Smith (Newport/Newport H.S.), and inner Jeannie Yarrow (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional H.S.).
Six players on the 7-9 Crusader women’s soccer team also were on their MAC Academic Honor Roll. Senior back Deb Cline (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg H.S.) and junior midfielder/back Kristen Gilbert (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac H.S.), are joined on the Honor Roll by four sophomores in forward Kim Anderson (Baytown, Texas/Parkland H.S.), forward/midfielder Michelle Badorf (Lancaster/Penn Manor H.S.), midfielder Jennifer Weirich (Middletown/Middletown H.S.) and back Janell Witkowski (Reading/Schuylkill Valley H.S.).
Five players from the 4-7 women’s tennis team are on their MAC Academic Honor Roll. Seniors Sarah Curley (Montrose/Elk Lake H.S.) and Becky Kagan (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore H.S.), join juniors Allyson Jones (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen H.S.) and Alyssa Miller (Sellersville/Pennridge H.S.), as well as sophomore Leah Candelori (Phoenixville/Phoenixville H.S.) on the Honor Roll.
The men’s cross country team was 10th in the MAC and 22nd in the NCAA Division III Mid-East Region, and has three MAC Academic Honor Roll selections in senior co-captain Ryan Neumyer (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley H.S.) and sophomores Mike Lehtonen (Laurens, N.Y./Morris Central H.S.) and Mark Norman (Liberty/Liberty H.S.).
The women’s cross country team was fourth in the conference and 13th in the region, and has two runners on the MAC Academic Honor Roll in junior Emily Dugan (Athens/Athens H.S.) and sophomore Stacey Brautigam (North Haledon, N.J./Hawthorne H.S.).
The Susquehanna men’s soccer team posted its first winning season since 1993 and has a pair of sophomore MAC Academic Honor Roll players in midfielder Luis Salgado (Neptune, N.J./Neptune H.S.) and back Aaron Zeisloft (Bloomsburg/Millville H.S.).
The women’s volleyball team posted a 17-13 record this season and has two players on its MAC Honor Roll in senior outside hitter and co-captain Jenn Ashton (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whiteboro H.S.) and sophomore outside hitter Lydia Steward (Philipsburg/Philipsburg-Oseola H.S.).
Aukema played in both games on the 1-1 Crusader junior varsity on the offensive line, and appeared in the varsity’s Commonwealth League championship-clinching 27-20 win at Albright in the season-finale.
He is a history major and the son of Owen and Mae Aukema.
Berwager was the starting quarterback for the first four games this season, and then moved to split end where he played the final four games — starting vs. Albright. He completed 36 of 69 passes (52.2%) for two touchdowns and three inteceptions as a quarterback, and caught four passes for 95 yards (23.8 avg.) as a receiver in the championship-clinching win at Albright.
He is a finance major and the son of Tim and Sheri Berwager.
Cidzik was the primary starting fullback this season, finishing fourth on the team in rushing with 209 yards on 57 carries (3.7 avg./26.1 per game), also catching a pass for a four-yard touchdown. He missed two games with ankle sprains.
He is a public relations major and the son of Alan and Janice Cidzik.
DiNorscia was a key contributor on special teams all season, also seeing considerable time at linebacker over the season’s final three games. He made eight tackles (four solo).
The president of the Student Government Association, he is a business major and the son of Joseph and Patricia DiNorscia.
Peca was a starter on the 1-1 junior varsity at offensive tackle.
He is a finance major and the son of Paul and Donna Peca.
Wonderlick was the starting center this season and one of the top linemen on the varsity, earning second-team MAC Commonwealth League All-Star honors. He led the team in knockdown blocks with 16, also not allowing a sack in 289 pass plays while giving up just three-and-a-half hurries.
Also an Academic All-American candidate as a communications/theatre arts major with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average, he is the son of Len and Louise Wonderlick.
Hoffman was a spot starter at defensive tackle and played in all 10 varsity games this season. He finished with 17 tackles (five solo), including a sack for a loss of five yards.
He is a business major and the son of Ronald and Geralyn Hoffman.
Hollis was fourth in the MAC in punting with a 36.8-yard average in 48 punts, including a long punt of 62 yards. He also caught five passes for 71 yards (14.2 avg.) as a split end this season.
Also on the national Academic All-American ballot as a business major, he is the son of Gordon and Joan Hollis.
Shaffer was also a starting center on the 1-1 junior varsity this season, seeing some spot duty on varsity.
He is a business major and the son of Dan and Jane Shaffer.
Also a first-team MAC Commonwealth Conference All-Star and second-team All-South-Atlantic Region selection, Reigle was the first Susquehanna field hockey player to start and play every game of her collegiate career — 71 games over her four seasons. She led a defense that posted a team goals-against average of 0.97 this season. She also scored the first points of her collegiate career in her regular-season home finale with a goal vs. Muhlenberg.
She is a psychology major, she is the daughter of Joseph and Debra Reigle.
Hughes was also a first-team conference All-Star and second-team all-region pick. Hughes was second on the team and fifth in the MAC Commonwealth Conference in assists per game with seven for 0.39 per game, also adding five goals to finish fourth on the team in scoring with 17 points (0.94 per game). She was fourth on the team in shots on goal with 44.
A psychology major, she is the daughter of Michael and Carol Hughes.
Cook was yet another first-team conference All-Star and second-team all-region selection, who never played as a goalkeeper before last season. She led the conference in both goals-against average and save percentage, finishing with a 1.05 goals-against mark and .838 save clip. She made 88 saves and allowed just 17 goals in the 17 games she played this season.
A business major, she is the daughter of Rodney and Pamela Cook.
Houck was a starting midfielder on the Crusader junior varsity field hockey team this fall, also seeing time in one varsity contest this season.
She is a mathematics major and the daughter of William and Suzanne Houck.
Smith saw time in six varsity games this fall on defense, helping the unit post its 0.97 team goals-against average. She was also a starting back on theJVs.
She is a mathematics major and the daughter of Hunter and Kathy Smith.
Yarrow is a two-year starter at inner and the team’s play-maker on offense. She was third on the team in scoring this fall with nine goals and five assists for 23 points (1.21 ppg).
She is a marketing major and the daughter of Walter, Jr., and Kathleen Yarrow.
Cline played in 15 games this season for the Crusader women’s soccer team, starting seven at midfield. She assisted a defensive unit that compiled a 1.45 team goals-against average and a school record six shutouts this season. She is an elementary-education major and the daughter of Robert and Marilyn Cline.
Gilbert started all 16 games for the Crusaders at defense, helping that unit post its 1.45 team goals-against average and school record six saves. She had 16 shots-on-goal this season.
She is a political science and journalism double major and the daughter of Craig and Irene Gilbert of Troy.
A second-team MAC Commonwealth All-Star, Anderson led the team in both goals and scoring for a second-straight year with six goals and an assist for 13 points (0.81 ppg).
She is a business major and the daughter of Gwynn and Alan Anderson.
Badorf appeared in 15 games this season, starting once at midfielder. She had eight shots-on-goal and tallied three assists this season for three points (0.20 points per game).
Also a swimming school record holder, Badorf is a biology major and the daughter of John and Patricia Geiger of Lancaster.
Weirich played in 12 games this season, starting nine at midfield. She also contributed to the 1.45 team goals-against average and school record six shutouts. She also had an assist offensively.
A Spanish education major, Weirich is the daughter of Larry and Rosemary Weirich.
Witkowski appeared in two games this season on defense, helping the unit compile a 1.45 team goals-against average with a school record six shutouts.
She is an accounting major and the daughter of Kevin Witkowski of Reading.
Curley finished her career with an impressive 23-16 singles record including a 5-4 singles mark this season playing primarily at number two singles. She capped her career as a MAC quarterfinalist in the conference doubles tournament. Curley had a 9-5 record in doubles play this season with two different partners.
She is an environmental science major and the daughter of Robert and Mary Curley.
Kagan finished her career with a 5-10 mark in singles competition including a 2-2 record this season. She also lost her only doubles match this season.
She is a biology major and the daughter of David and Beth Kagan of Jersey Shore.
Jones had a 3-5 record this season in doubles competition.
She is a elementary-education major and the daughter of Hugh and Ginger Jones.
Miller had a 1-3 singles mark at fifth and sixth singles this season. She also had a 2-1 mark in doubles play this year with two different partners.
She is a elementary-education and French double major and the daughter of Dana and Cindy Miller.
Candelori played anywhere between third and sixth singles this season and compiled a 5-4 record. She was 4-1 playing at fifth singles, helping her post one of the three winning records among the singles regulars. She also dropped two varsity doubles matches with two different partners.
She is a communications and theatre arts major and the daughter of Michael and Aleta Candelori.
Neumyer was 47th at the MAC Cross Country Championships (29:40.25), and 144th at the recent NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional Championships (29:20.20). His best time of the season was a 29:18.65 over the 8,000-meter course at the Dickinson Invitational on October 9.
He is mathematics major and the son of William and Suszanne Neumyer.
Lehtonen was the team’s top runner this fall, placing 77th out of 229 runners at the recent Mid-East Regional Championships (27:58.00). He placed as high as sixth at the Susquehanna Invitational on October 2, with his season best time being a 27:30.06 at the Allentown Invitational on October 17.
He is a mathematics major and the son of William and Nancy Lehtonen.
Norman was 96th at the MAC Championships (32:02.72) and had a season best finish of 35th at the Susquehanna Invitational on October 2. His best time this fall was a 30:14.11 at the Dickinson Invitational on October 9.
He is a music education major and the son of David and Agnes Norman.
An All-MAC hurdler and sprinter in track and field, Dugan was out for cross country for the first time this fall and had a season best finish of 74th at the Susquehanna Invitational on October 2nd, also posting her best time in that meet — covering the 5,000 meters in 28:56.38.
She is an elementary-education major and the daughter of John and Bonnie Dugan.
Brautigam also had her best finish in the team’s home meet on October 2nd, placing 63rd. Her best time came at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational at 24:17.38. She was 98th at the MAC Championships (24:51.38).
She is a biology major and the daughter of James and Karen Brautigam.
Salgado appeared in 17 games for the Crusader men’s soccer team this fall, starting 12 of them at midfielder. He scored two goals for a total of four points (0.24 points per game), also assisting a defense which posted a 2.22 team goals-against mark.
He is a business major and the son of Dr. Luis and Bernadette Salgado.
Zeisloft appeared in six games this year from his defender position before having his season cut short by a broken leg suffered at Scranton on October 6. He contributed to the team’s 2.22 goals-against average, which included four shutouts.
He is a business major and the son of Gerald and Patricia Zeisloft of Bloomsburg.
Ashton played in 78 of 106 games on the season – starting several matches at outside hitter. She finished the season with 105 kills (1.35 per game), 128 digs (1.64 per game) and seven total blocks (0.10 per game). She posted a .114 hitting percentage. In her career, Ashton played in 255 games and had 246 kills, 39 service aces and 357 digs.
She is an elementary-education major, and the daughter of James and Susan Ashton.
Steward battled back from a serious knee injury which forced her to sit out her freshman year and earned a starting job at outside hitter, playing in 101 of 106 games this season. She finished third on the team in service aces with 30 (0.30 per game) and in digs with 210 (2.08 per game). Steward also posted 130 kills (1.29 per game), hitting at a .174 percentage, and 13 total blocks (0.13 per game).
She is a business major and the daughter of Robert and Helen Steward of Philipsburg.
