SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University freshman cornerback Antonio Nash (Washington, D.C./Springbrook, Md. H.S.) is the inaugural recipient of the team's Gus Weber Crusader Football Player of the Week, sponsored by the Golden Corral Family Restaurant, for his standout defensive play in his team's 20-3 season opening win over Middle Atlantic Conference rival FDU-Madison last Saturday.
Nash also is on this week's national Team of the Week by D3football.com, and the Division III Rookie Honor Roll by USA Football (http://www.usafootball.com/).
Making his first collegiate start, the 5-9, 170-pound Nash made both the team's interceptions – returning them for 31 yards – and also recorded a pass break-up while posting six tackles (five solo). He also returned a pair of punt returns for six yards. Nash was a transfer to Susquehanna from Division II Cheyney University, where he didn't play football last fall, but started at cornerback in the team's annual spring intrasquad game.
"We knew from the first time we put the pads on that Antonio was a player. He showed everyone else Saturday what we've been seeing in practice," said 10th-year Crusader head coach Steve Briggs.
The recipient of the team's Gus Weber Player of the Week will have a check of $100 from Golden Corral donated to the charity of his choice. Nash will announce his choice at the team's weekly Quarterback Club Luncheon Friday at noon.
Nash is an accounting major and the son of Joann and Sampson Nash, Jr.
Susquehanna is idle this week and will next return to action on Saturday, September 18, hosting King's College for the school's annual Homecoming game.
