Women's Lacrosse to Battle Drew for MAC Title
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – For the second straight season and the fourth time in five years, Susquehanna and Drew will meet in the Middle Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse championship game with an NCAA Division III tournament berth on the line. The teams will battle on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Drew in a rematch of last Saturday’s regular-season finale in which the Rangers posted a 14-7 victory to earn home-field advantage for the title game. Last season, the squads hooked up in an epic battle on the West Lacrosse Field, with the Rangers withstanding a pair of Crusader rallies to pick up a 10-9 win in triple overtime and earn their eighth straight MAC crown. Susquehanna (11-4) defeated Widener 14-4 in a semifinal game on Wednesday while Drew (14-3) edged Scranton 12-11 to set up Saturday’s championship game. The Crusaders are led by senior attack Krista O’Brien (Sykesville, MD/Liberty H.S.), who has scored 38 goals and dished out 21 assists for a team-high 59 points on the season. She continues to add to her school-record totals of 167 goals and 65 assists for 232 points. Junior Kat Geiger (New Hope, PA/Hun School) scored five goals and added an assist against Widener to increase her season goal total to 25. She needs just eight goals to become the third player in school history with 100 career tallies. Junior goalkeeper Giulia Umile (Blue Bell, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy), who came within one of her single-game record with 25 saves in the Crusaders’ regular-season meeting with Drew, has racked up 175 saves and a 7.67 goals against average this season. The Rangers are paced by the high-scoring duo of Kara Fetter and Whitney McMullan. Fetter has tallied 56 goals and 70 points this season while McMullan, fresh off a five-goal performance against the Crusaders, has 47 goals and 59 points for the year. Fetter recorded five goals and an assist in the MAC championship game last season and has 117 goals in two seasons with the Rangers. Drew goalkeeper Emily Hoeflinger has posted a 7.95 goals against average and a .565 save percentage while playing all but eight minutes between the pipes on the year.
