Deamer Makes Fourth Trip to NCAA Track Championships
SELINSGROVE, PA – For the fourth straight year, Susquehanna University senior Matt Deamer will be in action at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships as he will compete in the javelin on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. Deamer (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley H.S.) is the second Crusader to compete four years at nationals, joining four-time national champion and seven-time All-American sprinter Mike Spangler (1985-88). The top seed in the event for each of the last two years, Deamer qualified for nationals this year following the third-longest modern javelin throw in NCAA Division III history of 236 feet, 1 ½ inches in the Crusaders’ season opening meet at Washington & Lee on March 15, a throw that also qualified him for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Stanford University from June 19-22. He went on to win his second straight Middle Atlantic Conference title at Widener on May 3 with a throw of 189 feet, 1 ½ inches to help Susquehanna capture its 13th conference team championship and 11th under 25th-year head coach Jim Taylor, who has coached a total of 32 All-Americans and seven national champions during his career. In previous NCAA action, Deamer finished 11th in 2000 with a throw of 183 feet, 8 inches and third in 2001 with a mark of 203 feet, 11 inches. Last year, he placed 12th in the event with a best distance of 190 feet, 5 inches. The Crusaders have had at least one entry in the men’s javelin in each of the last seven seasons, and Deamer is seeking to become Susquehanna third national champion in the event, following Adam Ressler in 2000 and Janee Shaner’s women’s title in 1998. Each of them have been coached by former Lewisburg High School and Susquehanna standout Cris Delbaugh, who is in his 12th year as throwing coach with the Crusaders and served as head boys’ track and field coach at Milton this spring.
