Four Named All-Conference in Women's Lacrosse
SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University has placed four players on the Middle Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse All-Conference team, as voted upon by the league’s 11 head coaches and announced Wednesday. Senior goalkeeper Giulia Umile became just the second player in program history to be named first team All-MAC four straight years, while senior midfielder Kelly Smith earned her second straight first team selection. Named to the second team and earning All-Conference honors for the first time in their respective careers were senior attack Kat Geiger and junior defender Cindy Fox. The quartet helped the Crusaders to an 8-6 overall record and a 6-4 mark in the MAC under first-year head coach Kate Scattergood. Umile (Blue Bell, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy), a two-time regional All-American, finished third in the MAC in goals against average (9.56) and save percentage (.534) while playing every minute of every game for the fourth consecutive season. Umile, who joins Sandy Jenkin (1996-99) as a four-time first-team all-MAC selection, compiled a 45-19 career record with an 8.17 goals against average and a .592 save percentage in 3,899 minutes of action – all school career records. Smith (New Egypt, NJ/Allentown H.S.) finished second in the MAC with 48 goals and led the Crusaders with 53 points. She scored five or more goals four times during the 2003 season and finished just three goals shy of the program single-season record of 51 set by Krista O’Brien in 2001. For her career, Smith scored 98 goals to rank fifth in program history and tallied 112 points to finish sixth on the Crusader all-time list. Geiger (New Hope, PA/Hun School) finished second to Smith on the team with 34 goals and 40 points during the 2003 season. Her 130 career goals rank second behind O’Brien (171) while her 156 points are the third-most in Susquehanna women’s lacrosse history. Fox (Harleysville, PA/Souderton H.S.) started 11 games for the Crusaders and keyed a defense that allowed less than 10 goals in nine of 16 games, including three contests that went to overtime. Fox was credited with 16 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers during the season, and has 60 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers during her career.
