Men's Lacrosse Travels to Elizabethtown on Monday

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Fresh off a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory over Drew on Saturday that clinched the first-ever playoff berth in program history, the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team will travel to Elizabethtown on Monday at 4:00 p.m. for a Middle Atlantic Conference first-round game.

The Crusaders (8-7 overall, 6-4 MAC) earned the fifth seed in the six-team field and will look to avenge a 9-5 loss to the fourth-seeded Blue Jays (6-9 overall, 6-4 MAC) on April 19 at Sassafras Field. Susquehanna has not defeated Elizabethtown in five all-time meetings.

Admission to Monday's game is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $2 for students with children under six admitted free. Susquehanna University students who show their school identification at the gate will be admitted free of charge compliments of the Varsity Club.

The winner of Monday's game will play in the MAC semifinals on Thursday against either top-seeded Widener or second-seeded Messiah, pending the outcome of Monday's other first-round game between third-seeded FDU-Florham and sixth-seeded Drew.

Now in their seventh season as a varsity program, the Crusader men's lacrosse team has established program records for victories (eight) and conference wins (six) while finishing the regular season with a winning record for the first time.

Senior long-stick midfielder Mike Szulc propelled the Crusaders to the postseason with his dramatic rush and shot with 16 seconds left in the first overtime period in Saturday's win over Drew. It was the first career goal for Szulc in his 53 rd game in orange and maroon and capped a wild second half that saw the game tied at 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Leading the Crusader offense is the sophomore trio of BJ Allen (Stamford, CT /Berkshire School), Ryan Walters (Easton, PA / Easton) and Tim Storck (Cockeysville, MD /Dulaney) along with senior Mike Tozzi (Lutherville, MD /Loyola Blakefield).

Allen leads the Crusaders in scoring with 36 points on 20 goals and a team-high 16 assists, while Walters paces the squad with 27 goals including four man-up goals. Tozzi has added 17 goals and seven assists for 24 points while Storck has 18 goals (six man-up) and three assists for 21 points.

Defensively, sophomore midfielder Greg Burns (Charlotte, NC /South Mecklenburg) has picked up a team-high 66 ground balls and has added 10 goals, while sophomore Conor Buckley (Flemington, NJ /Hunterdon Central) is one of the top face-off performers in the MAC with a 58.7 percent victory rate (162-for-276).

In goal, sophomore Kirk Ryan (Wayne, PA /Radnor) has started 11 games and has a 6-5 record with a 10.19 goals against average and a .541 save percentage. Ryan has played nine complete games in goal and has an 8.31 goals against average in those contests.

The Blue Jays are paced by junior standout Frankie Puzzangara who leads the team in goals (42), points (49), shots (216), ground balls (113) and faceoffs (134-for-213, 62.9 percent). Goalkeeper Chris Schuch has an 8.89 goals against average and a .590 save percentage in 14 starts for the Blue Jays, who have just four seniors on their 25-player roster.
