Crusader Softball Earns Conference Honors

SELINSGROVE, Pa . – Susquehanna University junior shortstop Sarah Shaffer was named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in softball, head coach Kathy Kroupa earned Coach of the Year honors, and a total of four players were selected to the All-Conference team in voting by the league's eight head coaches, the conference announced Monday.

Shaffer was a first-team selection while senior pitcher Jess Nastelli, sophomore third baseman Megan McCurley and junior catcher Kerri Brugger earned second-team honors as the Crusaders finished 22-12 overall and in fourth place in the Commonwealth Conference with an 8-6 league mark.

Shaffer (New Castle, PA/Shenango), a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and a third-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-East Region selection, hit .422 with six home runs and 25 runs batted in for the Crusaders, and led the Commonwealth Conference in both slugging percentage (.761) and triples (five) while setting a single-season program record for home runs and tying the mark for doubles with nine.

In three seasons, Shaffer has a .377 average with 15 doubles, 10 triples, six home runs and 52 runs batted in along with 115 hits and 65 runs scored in 93 games.

Kroupa finished her fourth season as head coach by leading the Crusaders to the second-highest single-season win total in program history, trailing only the 26 victories by the 1998 squad, despite having just two seniors on the roster. In her four seasons, the Crusaders have a 66-52-1 record.

Nastelli (Berwick, PA/Berwick) went 10-4 with a 0.95 earned run average in 18 games (15 starts) this season. In 110 innings of work, she struck out 71 and allowed just 73 hits while holding opponents to a .183 batting average.

For her career, Nastelli compiled a 23-14 record with a 1.59 earned run average in 48 games (35 starts), with 29 complete games and eight shutouts. In program history, she ranks sixth in career wins, fourth in earned run average and fifth in strikeouts (191).

McCurley (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) hit .333 with seven doubles and 12 runs batted in including a .395 average after moving to the leadoff spot in the lineup for the final 11 games of the season. She also led the Commonwealth Conference in assists with 102.

In two seasons, McCurley has a career average of .362 with 75 hits, 14 doubles and 36 runs scored in 64 games.

Brugger (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) batted .333 with three home runs and 30 runs batted in and ranked third in the conference in both RBI and walks (12). Her 30 runs batted in were just two shy of the program record of 32 set by Meg Sorber in 1988.

In three seasons, Brugger has a career average of .280 with three home runs, 45 runs batted in and 58 hits in 74 games.
