Men's Golf to Compete at NCAA Championships

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University men's golf team will join 34 other schools at the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships, beginning Tuesday and continuing through Friday in suburban Indianapolis.

The Crusaders secured their seventh trip to nationals under head coach Don Harnum by winning the Commonwealth Conference championship by 34 strokes over runner-up Moravian College. Susquehanna's previous trips to the NCAA Championships came in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Susquehanna has won the last four tournaments in which it has competed, while breaking the 300 mark in six consecutive 18-hole rounds and seven times overall in 12 rounds this spring.

Leading the Crusader lineup is junior Pat Serfass (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus), who averages a team-best 73.3 shots per round. He won three straight tournaments (Elizabethtown, Susquehanna, Glenmaura National) to end the regular season and finished second at the Commonwealth championships with a two-under-par score of 216.

Junior Scott Cruff (Newington, CT/Newington) averages 76.8 shots in nine rounds this season and took seventh at the Commonwealth championships with a score of 225, while junior Brock Christine (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) is averaging 79.0 for the season and was eighth in the conference with a 54-hole total of 227.

Freshman Mitch Mercer (Wexford, PA/Pine-Richland) earned Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year honors after finishing third in the conference championships with a score of 221, and is averaging 76.5 for the season, while fellow freshman Zach Prowant (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) was fifth in the conference at 224 and holds a season average of 78.6.

The NCAA field consists of 35 teams and five individuals for a total of 180 players. The competitors will alternate between The Hawthorns Country Club and Prairie View Golf Club during the first two days of the tournament, after which the field will be pared to the top 23 teams for the final two days of the tournament, which will be played at The Hawthorns.
